A Pathway to Immigration After graduating, a student can apply to become a permanent resident of Canada and live in Canada permanently. Within 3 more years, a permeant resident can also obtain legal Canadian Citizenship.

English - Canada is a great destination to learn English. Most educational institutions provide English education to foreign students at a preparatory level before starting their main area of study. Many institutions also offer separate English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) programs at all language levels.

Work While you StudyAn international student can work up to 20 hours on or off campus while they study. During summer breaks they can also work full-time. There are also many opportunities for practical on-the-job training.

Careers in Canada A student who has completed at least eight months of full-time studies at an approved institution can participate in the post-graduate work permit program and stay in Canada for up to 3 more years after graduation. Canadian Study Permit/Visa

  • A foreign national can study in Canada with a valid study permit if the duration of the program is more than six months, or without study permit if their program is six months or less
  • In some cases, foreign nationals can be exempt from needing a study permit (Ex: accompanying dependent children)
  • A foreign national must also obtain a Visa to travel to Canada - unless they are citizen of a visa exempt country
  • Eligible education institutions must be labelled as “Designated Learning Institute” (DLI)

Get a Study Permit

An international student must have following before they can
apply for a study permit:

  • An acceptance letter from the Designated Learning Institute in Canada
  • Proof of available funds to support their study and living expense while in Canada
  • Valid passport
  • Medical assessment by an approved panel physician/police certificate (if required)
  • Other documents required based on the individual(s) profile
  • Processing time is typically 6-8 weeks depending on the country of application

For legal residents of China, India, the Philippines, or Vietnam:

Get accelerated 20-day processing with the Student Direct Stream Program (SDS).

Applicant must have following to be eligible:

  • An acceptance letter from the Designated Learning Institute in Canada
  • Paid first-year tuition in full before applying
  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of $10,000 (redeemable, with interest, after arriving in Canada)
  • Medical assessment by an approved panel physician/police certificates (if required)
  • A proof of your adequate language ability with a minimum IELTS 6.0 in each category, or TEF 7.0 for French


An international student must have a valid study permit for the entirety of their studies in Canada. If your study permit is expiring earlier than the completion of your studies, then you must apply for an extension at least 30 days before it expires.
